Since its reveal a couple of years back, the second-generation Kia Soul has been a firm favourite here at CAR, claiming a Top 12 runner-up spot and winning the crossover comparative test in our September 2016 issue. And now the facelift version has been revealed, ahead of its official debut at the Paris Motor Show.
The update includes some visual enhancements, inside and out, as well as the option of a new turbocharged petrol engine. Safety features and a revised infotainment system have also been included.
The revised Soul has new bumpers and a metallic skid plate, while HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights are now available as an option.
Interior trims gain a gloss-black finish and metallic highlights, while the various infotainment systems on offer now provide smartphone-style touchscreen control (as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality).
USB ports have also been added for rear passengers, while the optional extras list now includes eight-way power-adjustable front seats, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, blind-spot detection and rear cross traffic alert.
The new 1,6-litre T-GDI engine, meanwhile, is perhaps the biggest news, and delivers 152 kW to the front wheels via the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. With this, the Soul is able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a little over 7,5 seconds and on to a top speed of 196 km/h.
The updated Soul is expected to reach dealerships in Europe within the next few months. No word yet on possible timing of local introduction, nor whether South Africa will receive this new engine option.
