We knew it was coming, and now the first pictures of the new 991 Porsche 911 R have been leaked. As expected this is a manual 911, and it seems it will be a manual-only car. Also, rumours suggest that only 500 will be produced.
The 911 R is the result of Porsche releasing both the 991 GT3 and GT3 RS with only the PDK automatic transmission, and some clients still longing for a manual gearbox in the top-tier 911 model. However, now some buyers will be able to enjoy the 373 kW, 4,0-litre, flat-six engine connected with a manual gearbox.
Although the engine is not the same as the unit previously used in the limited production 997 GT3 RS 4.0, it will only be the second time buyers will have the option of a 4,0-litre, flat-six engine connected with a manual gearbox.
Purists might cry out in despair as this 911 R is unlikely to be the lightest current generation 911. The original 911 R was, however, the lightest ever production 911.
Having said that, the new R seems to have a few tantalising features such as the bucket seats trimmed in modern chequered cloth.
Move to the exterior and except for the omission of the huge rear wing, the body is pure GT3-inspired, including the wheels and brakes.
More details to follow in the coming days.
