A few years ago Mercedes-Benz dropped a massive bombshell on the motoring world with their G63 AMG 6×6. Now the brand is set to expand its G-Class range with the G500 4×4²being confirmed for production.
The Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4², first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March of this year, had received positive response from the motoring public and it prompted them to give the vehicle the green light.
The G500 4×4² is will have a raised ride height (450 mm), permanent all-wheel –drive, reduction transfer case, three differential locks, and the same portal axles of the aforementioned G63 6×6.
The Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4² rides on 22-inch wheels, but interestingly, the wheels are not at the height of the axles, but are situated lower courtesy of the portal transmission.
Power is derived from a 4,0-litre twin turbocharged V8 that churns out 312 kW and 610 Nm. This same engine has been confirmed for the Mercedes-Benz G550 that’s been confirmed for 2016.
The order books for the Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4² is now open, and given that South Africa is one of the AMG’s best markets, it should only be a matter of time before it’s confirmed for local launch.
