Technically it is the facelifted Mercedes-Benz GL, but to slot in with Mercedes-Benz’s new naming strategy, this 7-seater is now called the GLS.
The front of the SUV now features an updated grille and headlights, which incorporate the LED daytime running lights.
Along the side and rear of the car the GLS still features a very strong design with an abundance of road presence. However, the facelifted car features more rounded design elements than the SUV it replaces.
As has been the case with all new Mercedes-Benz models, the cabin now features the high-mounted infotainment screen, here in the larger 8-inch format.
As expected, Mercedes’ most luxurious SUV has been equipped with the company’s latest safety features. A few of these include Attention Assist, Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Crosswind Assist.
Options include the well-known infrared night vision system and the Magic Vision Control with the heated windscreen wiper system.
The engine range will consist of the V8 biturbo engine, now producing 335 kW and 700 N.m and the 3,0-litre, V6 biturbo with 270 kW and 500 N.m.
As before, there will also be an AMG version called the Mercedes-AMG GLS63. This unit will be equipped with the 430 kW/760 N.m version of the biturbo V8 engine.
Customers who prefer the turbodiesel derivative will have the option of the GLS350d with 190 kW/616 N.m.
Finally there will be the option of specifying your car with a low-range system and centre differential lock, although this won’t be possible on the AMG version.
Expect the local introduction to take place around the second quarter of 2016 with model specifications and options made available closer to the time.
