Mercedes-Benz has revealed the new E-Class All-Terrain, which is based on the conventional estate but adds greater ground clearance, the brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system and more rugged exterior styling.
The new E-Class All-Terrain will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show, before taking on the likes of the new Volvo V90 Cross Country.
Up front, the E-Class All-Terrain features an SUV-style twin-fin grille with the star integrated in its centre, as well as a distinctive front bumper and lower panelling, electroplated in silver-chrome. The upper section of the three-part front bumper is painted in body colour while the lower part comes in black plastic.
In profile, the customary black wheel-arch covers are present and correct, as are the black side-skirts (each with a chrome strip). Three model-specific alloy wheel sets in 19- and 20-inch formats (with higher sidewalls) will be available.
Round back, there’s a unique three-part bumper, which follows the same body-colour-to-black-plastic formula as the front. Then there’s also load-sill protection and an underbody guard electroplated in silver-chrome.
Inside, this model gains aluminium-carbon-effect trim that is exclusive to the All-Terrain, as well as items such as stainless steel sports pedals and floor mats with “All-Terrain” lettering.
Internationally, the E-Class All-Terrain will be launched as the E 220 d 4Matic, which means it uses the Stuttgart automaker’s newly developed, 143 kW/400 N.m, 2,0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. A six-cylinder diesel option will follow, with both featuring a nine-speed automatic transmission as standard.
The standard Dynamic Select system features an All-Terrain driving programme (one of its five modes), which offers settings for off-road driving, including the hiking of the suspension by 20 mm up to a speed of 35 km/h.
Expect to see more of the new E-Class All-Terrain after its debut in Paris.
