Opel has just lifted the wraps on the latest iteration of the venerable Corsa. The fifth generation model, also known as Corsa E, will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.
There’s a hint of familiarity about the Corsa’s exterior that might be due to the German firm’s design department being a bit reluctant to mess with the current Corsa’s formula. Even though it has similarities with the Corsa D, this new model does boast a new nose inspired by the Adam, more details in the profile, and new rump that seems to be a mix of Astra and Meriva.
The new Corsa does not inherit a single component from the current Corsa. Instead it features a new chassis and new steering system. It has a 5 mm lower centre of gravity than before, a stiffer sub-frame and a new suspension geometry for improved straight line and cornering stability and better driving dynamics. It is marginally longer (3 mm), so in terms of cabin room it’ll offer virtually the same as before. Overall perceived quality has also been updated through the use of more premium materials. There’s also a host of new features, including Opel’s new Intellilink touchscreen infotainment system, heated front seat, ambient lighting and panoramic roof.
On the safety front, customers will now be able to tick off the likes of Blindspot Assist, High Beam Assist and Lane Departure Warning. Driver aids include Hill Start Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, and Automatic Park Assist (which leaves the steering up the the Corsa’s ECU for tight parking spots).
The new Corsa also sees the introduction of General Motors’ new turbocharged 1,0-litre 3-cylinder engine that will be available with two power outputs – both of which will boast a torque output of 170 N.m. A new version of the company’s 1,4-litre normally aspirated four-cylinder engine will also be available, as well as a new 1,4 turbocharged and a revised 1,3-litre turbodiesel. The new Corsa’s engines will be mated to either a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox.
More details will be revealed closer to the opening of the Paris Motor Show.
