By now we are use to the plug-in hybrid powertrains. Even the world’s most notable hypercars, the LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918, feature this technology.
Now it seems we could seen this type of drivetrain filter through to cars such as hatchbacks.
Peugeot has released preliminary details of its 308R Hybrid. Part of the reason for building the car is showing the versatility of the EMP2 platform, on which the standard 308 range and this R version, are built. As interesting as that may be, it is the performance figures that make for some interesting reading.
371 kW and 730 N.m is the combined power and torque delivery coming from three individual power sources. The 1,6-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder THP petrol engine develops 201 kW, an electric motor delivers 85 kW up front and another electric motor with the same output on the rear axle.
Powering the electric motors is a Lithium-Ion, 3 kW/h battery. It is placed under the rear seats, where the fuel tank usually resides. In turn, the fuel tank has been moved to the boot, positioned above the rear electric motor. Three different power modes will offer 224, 298 or the full 371 kW.
Thanks to the all-wheel drive system, the dash to 100 km/h is dealt with in 4,0 seconds, while top speed is limited to 250 km/h. The 1 km run is completed in 22 seconds, while Peugeot claims an average CO2 figure of 70 g/km. To deal with the additional performance, and improve the car’s dynamic ability, the front and rear tracks have also been widened by 80 mm.
The 308R Hybrid will be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show, staring on 20 April. Now, will Peugeot be so brave in building a hatch with similar performance to this concept?
