When the original Bugatti Veyron was unveiled, it made headlines all over the world’s motoring media. It was an impressive machine for so many reasons. Now its replacement has been unveiled, and it makes for impressive reading.
Powering the Chiron is a reworked version of the now familiar W16, 8,0-litre engine with its four turbochargers. However, power is now up to an astonishing 1 119 kW at 6 700 r/min and 1 600 N.m between 2 000 and 6 000 r/min. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission has also been improved, and, as before, the torque is send to both axles.
Bugatti claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration figure of less than 2,5 seconds (!), and the dash to 200 km/h takes under 6,5 seconds, while 300 km/h is achieved in 13,6 seconds. The limited top speed is 420 km/h.
However, the Chiron is larger than the Veyron (82 mm longer, 53 mm higher and 40 mm wider), which also means that it is 155 kg heavier, resulting in a total of 1 995 kg.
Interestingly, the speedometre is analog and not digital. The reason being, according to Wolfgang Dürheimer, head of Bugatti, that people can peak inside and see what the car is capable of. No wonder they have decided to round of the speedometre to 500 km/h!
According to reports, Bugatti has already received around 150 orders, and the company will only be making 500 units. The launch price will be $2,61 million (+-R41 million).
