As expected, only months after launching the Porsche 718 Boxster (reading our driving impression here), Porsche has launched its 718 Cayman. The updated styling cues first seen on the Porsche 718 Boxster have now filtered through to Porsche’s mid-engined coupé. This is also the case with the engine range.
Gone are the naturally-aspirated flat-six engines, replaced by turbocharged, four-cylinder engines. Unfortunately, for the first time the Cayman’s specifications, in terms of power and torque, are exactly the same as that of the Boxster. Usually, the Cayman was given a handful of kW above that of the Boxster.
However, in an interesting move, the Cayman is also priced, marginally, below that of the Boxster.
The 718 Cayman comes equipped with the flat-four, 2,0-litre turbo engine developing 220 kW and 380 N.m. The claimed 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 4,7 seconds with a top speed of 275 km/h. The 718 Cayman S comes with the 2,5-litre, flat-four turbo engine and features Porsche’s variable turbine geometry. It develops 257 kW and 420 N.m. The sprint to 100 km/h is dispatched in 4,2 seconds and the top speed is 285 km/h.
Porsche South Africa has also confirmed that the cars can now be ordered, while the first models will arrive by the end of September.
