The Porsche Cayman and Boxster have always shared a close relationship since the original Cayman’s introduction in 2005.
Facelifted models will be launched simultaneously and engine upgrades will be implemented across both ranges, with the Cayman always slightly leading in terms of power output.
When the Cayman GT4 was unveiled, we expected that Porsche will be taking the covers off its new Boxster Spyder any time soon. We have seen this car being tested by Porsche’s engineers in Cape Town recently, but now the full details of what is arguably the prettiest Boxster to date, have been made public.
The mid-engined roadster features the same 911 Carrera S-sourced 3,8-litre engine found in the GT4. However, power is only marginally down. Still, with 276 kW on taps, the Spyder will hit 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 4,5 seconds and a top speed of 290 km/h.
As is the case with the Cayman GT4, the Spyder comes exclusively with a manual gearbox, unlike its predecessor which was also available with Porsche’s PDK transmission.
The Spyder also features 911 brakes, sports suspension that lowers the car by 20 mm and Cayman GT4 parts at the front and rear of the car.
The signature feature is the beautiful rear deck and the soft top which is now not as elementary as the previous model’s system.
The Spyder will be priced from R1 010 000 and the first examples will arrive in South Africa by August.
Watch the video of the new Spyder above, which was, you’ve guessed it, shot in the Western Cape.
