Porsche has revealed one of the surprises at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Called the Porsche Mission E, it is a battery powered four-seat electric car that develops a supercar-rivalling 440 kW, has a range of 500 km and only needs 15 minutes to charge up to 80% capacity. These are numbers we have not seen before for an electric car.
Further highlights include the all-wheel drive system, all-wheel steering system, while Porsche claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3,5 seconds. The dash to 200 km/h is claimed to be under 12 seconds.
It is no surprise that Porsche has gained information and experience from its 919 endurance racers. The Mission E features two permanent magnet synchronous motors, which is similar to those used in this year’s Le Mans-winning race car.
The most interesting fact of the Porsche’s press release is probably the words “this makes the Mission E fit for the race track, with its lap time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife under the 8-minute mark”.
In terms of practicality, the 800-volt technology allows for an impressive driving range of up to 500 km. The lithium-ion battery is mounted in the car’s underbody, assisting with a low-centre of gravity. The car’s body is manufactured from aluminium, steel as well as carbon-fibre reinforced polymer. Finally, the wheels are made of carbon, while the front features 21-inch wheels and the rear 22-inch wheels.
Although being a concept, expect to see a production version with this technology to be shown in the next few years.
