Last night Jaguar has revealed the new XF sedan in London. From the press release there is a couple of facts that Jaguar is clearly quite eager to point out. They claim the XF is a significant 80 kg lighter than its closest competitor, while the most frugal engine derivative only emits 104 g of CO2/km.
Same as the compact XE sedan, the new XF is based on Jaguar’s aluminium-intensive architecture. The result is that 75% of the platform is made up of aluminium leading to a massive saving of up to 190 kg over its predecessor. There is also an increase of 28% in the car’s torsional stiffness.
The new XF is actually 7 mm shorter and 3 mm lower than the car it replaces. However, the wheelbase has increased by 51 mm, leading to more interior room for occupants.
The interior offers the same smooth a fuss-free design as its predecessor. The highlight is the larger InControl Touch Pro infotainment screen. This system features a solid-state drive and a quad-core processor, helping with exceptional data transfer rates.
Well-known Jaguar design director Ian Callum had the following to say: “Inside too, we have been driven by the desire to ensure the XF’s cabin is as comforting as it is comfortable. New technology, including our new 10,2-inch touchscreen, is combined carefully with materials that cosset and reassure. The all-new XF has a clear sense of calm and strength, both outside and inside – and I’m proud of my team for delivering that.”
Engines
The 2,0-litre Ingenium turbodiesel engine is available in two power derivatives (120 kW/380 N.m and 132 kW/430 N.m). Although these engines are available with a six-speed manual gearbox and an eight-speed automatic transmission, it is highly unlikely that Jaguar will be bringing the manual versions to South Africa. The top-of-the-range turbodiesel engine is the 221 kW/700 N.m, 3,0-litre V6 unit, while the 3,0-litre, V6 supercharged petrol engine develops 279 kW/450 N.m.
As with the F-Type, the Jaguar Configurable Dynamics system gives the driver control of the dampers, steering, engine as well as the eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Jaguar XF will make its global motor show debut on 1 April at the New York Auto Show.
