Toyota’s 86 has created a massive following since its global launch in 2012 thanks to its low cost and massive fun factor. Now the lovable Japanese Coupe/GT has received a facelift to rejuvenate its presence in the low-end sportscar segment. The 86 has been given some visual changes and tweaks to both the engine and suspension.
The 86 now has a bigger set of air intakes in the redesigned front bumper along with revised fog lamp housings and a new LED headlamp design. Other changes include a new taillamp design and redesigned twisted spoke alloy wheels. The interior has also been enhanced and will make use of a new combination of leather and Alcantara and a new steering wheel design.
The shocks and spring rate of the 86 have been revised to make the coupe more agile and easier to control which might be necessary thanks to the minor increase of power and torque from the 2,0-litre straight four boxer engine which will now deliver 153 kW and 212 N.m of torque.
American models will make us of some tweaks to the six-speed manual transmission as well as a hill start assist function.
No news on whether this facelift will be making its way to South African shores but given the popularity it has achieved over here the chances are high. Expect to hear more about the revised 86 after the New York International Auto Show.
