Volkswagen SA has added a 2,0 TDI derivative to its local Passat range, while also taking the chance to restructure its model line-up.
At the local launch in October 2015, the eighth-generation Passat was offered with a choice of petrol engines only. But now VW SA has finally introduced a turbodiesel model, while also apparently canning the 1,8 TSI engine.
The 2,0-litre TDI is linked to a six-speed DSG and makes 130 kW and 350 N.m, with the latter on tap from as low as 1 500 r/min. The obligatory sprint from zero to 100 km/h takes a claimed 8,2 seconds, while top speed comes in at 228 km/h. Claimed combined fuel economy, meanwhile, is 5,0 L/100km.
The rejigged range now comprises two new equipment lines: Luxury and Executive (replacing Comfortline, Highline and R-Line). The so-called Luxury derivatives feature LED headlights, three-zone climate control and “Vienna” leather seats (with a heating function up front) as standard.
The posher Executive trim adds App Connect, “Nappa” leather, dynamic cornering lights, LED daytime running lights and the R-Line styling package (comprising a model-exclusive front grille, front and rear bumpers, side skirts and 18-inch “Marseille” alloys).
VW SA furthermore says that existing optional equipment has been “repackaged to give customers more value”.
The new optional packages include: the Tow Package (towbar, trailer assist and park assist); Safety Package (Adaptive Cruise Control and head-up display); Park Package (keyless access, automatic boot, rear view camera and park assist); Park Package with Area View (area view, keyless access, automatic boot and park assist); Luxury Package (electric front seats, electric folding mirrors, DynAudio sound system, ambience lighting and 230V socket) and R-Line Styling Package (Luxury models).
All models come standard with a five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.
