Twelve trainees from Volkswagen have together created a 295 kW Golf GTI Heartbeat, unveiling the one-off vehicle at the 35th Wörthersee meeting in Austria.
The special car is based on the Golf GTI Performance model – with a suitably upgraded version of the familiar 2,0-litre turbocharged four-pot – and was put together in slightly less than nine months on the basis of ideas developed by the apprentices.
The body of the two-door Volkswagen Golf GTI Heartbeat is painted metallic silver, with the roof and front end covered in a contrasting dark grey foil. GTI honeycomb designs in bright red and contrasting greys adorn the bonnet, roof, and sides, while a set of 20-inch BBS alloys fill the arches.
The front of the passenger compartment, meanwhile, is dominated by two folding bucket seats from the recently unveiled Golf GTI Clubsport S, each decorated with a crystal grey embroidered “40“ emblem on the headrest and honeycomb perforations with a red background on the backrest.
The back seats have been binned, with the rear of the car (including the luggage compartment) instead housing a high-end 1 360 watt sound system with seven speakers, LED lighting, and engraved glass covers.
The Wolfsburg automaker says the five women and seven men – aged between 20 and 26 – planned and completed much of the build themselves.
The Golf GTI Heartbeat is the ninth GTI project vehicle of Volkswagen Vocational Training to be presented by apprentices and to make its world debut at the Wörthersee meeting since 2008.
