The idea of an open top SUV is not usually a welcome thought for many reasons but the way in which the crossover trend has been taking over the automotive world we are seeing this practice as something which is slightly more accepted. This is the VW T-Cross Breeze which was leaked earlier last week and it intends to fill this unnecessary gap within the Volkswagen group.
The T-Cross Breeze seems to be based on a unique platform with its dimensions being only slightly larger than the Cross Polo. It draws a lot of design cues from the current Tiguan apart from the square LED driving lights. A lot of the trimming also draws some inspiration from the current Caddy Alltrack such as the plastic arches and front and rear anti-scuff plates.
Interior space of the T-Cross Breeze is also quite forgiving with a claimed capacity of 300-litres with the black fabric soft top folded all the way up. Legroom does appear to be limited in the four-seater arrangement despite having a wheelbase of 2 565 mm. The cabin of the T-Cross Breeze shows a lot of cues to the Budd-e concept revealed last month with its active-info display and 300-watt Beats Audio sound system.
Powering this oddball crossover will be Volkswagen’s 1,0-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol engine pushing out 81 kW and 175 N.m of torque delivered to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This, with the total mass of 1 250 kg gives the T-Cross Breeze a 0-100 km/h time of 10.3 seconds with the roof up until it reaches its top speed of 188 km/h.
Despite this being just a concept, Volkswagen seem adamant about the fact that they will produce this as a showroom model. No word on when this crossover will make it to the line, though.
