The new Volkswagen Polo GTI has launched in South Africa (read our driving impression here) at a slightly cheaper price than its predecessor, as we revealed in our pricing scoop story at the end of May 2018. But what about optional extras for the locally built B-segment blaster?
Well, at the time of writing, the new R375 900 Polo GTI, which has upsized to a turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine sending 147 kW and 320 N.m to the front axle via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, has yet to appear on VW SA’s configurator. Don’t worry, though, we’ve got you covered.
Yes, fresh from the local launch, we have pricing for the 11 main items that will appear on the Polo GTI’s optional extras list (note that these are the features listed by VW SA during its media briefing; one or two others may well be added when the configurator goes live).
LED headlamps are at the top of the pile price-wise and will set you back R12 450. Next is the Discover Media Navigation (R12 150), followed by the R11 850 Advanced Safety Package (which includes parallel park assist, park distance control, reversing camera, blind-spot detection and electric folding mirrors). Interestingly, park distance control (fore and aft) can also be specified separately, for the sum of R3 150.
A panoramic sunroof comes in at R10 550, while leather sports seats with a heating function are priced at R9 850 and will be available from August 2018 (interestingly, VW SA says we are the only country in the world to have leather as an option; many overseas markets ship standard with “Clark” tartan pattern upholstery while SA-spec models have “Art Velour” microfleece as standard).
Meanwhile, the Luxury Package (R8 650) comprises the brand’s Climatronic air-conditioning system as well as keyless access. Active info display (pictured above) will set you back the same amount (from what we understand, ticking this box will force you to upgrade from the standard Composition Media system to the aforementioned Discover Media Navigation arrangement), while the 18-inch Brescia alloys (pictured below) come in at R5 550.
The Sport Select suspension system with two-mode damping costs R5 050, while the Lights and Vision Package (which includes automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and an electrochromatic rear-view mirror) is priced at R3 850.
In addition, the Polo GTI will be offered in four exterior colours (Pure White, Flash Red, Deep Black Pearl Effect and Reef Blue Metallic), while a panel that covers part of the dashboard can be ordered in Deep Iron Metallic or Velvet Red (though the latter is not available in conjunction with the Flash Red exterior hue).
