The boutique hatch market is dominated by BMW’s Mini, with the Citroen DS3 and co playing second fiddle. Well, next year there will be another contender in this small car segment, the Opel Adam. General Motors SA just recently announced that the model will go on sale locally in 2015, some two years after being available in international markets.
No details are yet available for the Adam – named after the company’s founder -, but we can’t see the local range differing too much from the international offerings. European buyers can choose between a 51 kW 1,2-litre, 64 kW from a 1,4-litre or a 74 kW 1,4-litre engine. All engines are combined with a five-speed manual transmission.
Much like the other main players in this segment Opel will be offering a large degree of personalisation for Adam buyers.
A small Mokka
Bolstering Opel’s offerings in 2015 will be another small newcomer, the Mokka. This is baby SUV (though we’d consider it a crossover) will be on sale in the second quarter of 2015.
According to GMSA, “the new Mokka range will offer a mix of exciting derivatives specifically designed to suit the varied needs of the South African compact SUV consumer and will be competitively priced while offering high levels of equipment and specification from the entry level up.”
“As part of the ongoing Opel brand and product resurgence in South Africa, we are excited to announce the introduction of two all new Opel vehicles into the South African market in 2015. The Adam and Mokka continue the Opel brand’s German heritage which is reflected in their exciting design, engaging driving experience and practical innovations,” says Opel Brand Manager, Christopher Cradock.
Expect pricing and more details closer to the launch date next year.
