When the new Renault Mégane RS was revealed back in September 2017, the French brand was distinctly light on the performance details. But now Renault has finally released the claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of its latest hot hatch.
Now powered by a 1,8-litre four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine tuned to deliver 205 kW and 390 N.m, the new Mégane RS – which is expected to launch in South Africa in the second quarter of 2018 – can be specified with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Regardless of which gearbox you choose, Renault says the latest Mégane RS will sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 5,8 seconds. That makes it two-tenths quicker than the outgoing (manual only) Mégane RS 275 Finale model.
The Boulogne-Billancourt-based brand furthermore claims that the manual version will sip at 7,1 L/100 km on 18-inch alloys, while the self-shifting model will manage 6,9 L/100 km.
In Europe, the new model boasts four-wheel steering and two chassis options – Sport and Cup, each with specific suspension settings – at launch. However, the French automaker has already confirmed that a Trophy version will be added to the range before the end of 2018, with the same 1,8-litre boosted to deliver peak outputs of 220 kW and 400 N.m.
