The head of the PSA Group says that turning around Opel’s fortunes is his “number one priority”.
Carlos Tavares, who stepped into the role of CEO at the ailing PSA Group in 2013 and quickly whipped the French company into shape, says Opel now finds itself in a similar position.
“The numbers I see [from] Opel and the numbers we were seeing from outside demonstrate that the Opel situation is very similar … [to] the PSA situation back in 2013,” Tavares said, according to Automotive News.
“Opel is PSA 2013,” he said, before adding that “turning Opel around is my priority number one”.
Tavares went on to say that Opel – which the PSA Group (that also runs the Peugeot, Citroën and DS Automobiles brands) purchased from General Motors back in March 2017 – would stay a decidely German brand.
“Opel is a German brand. Its models will continue to be designed and engineered by German engineers,” he insisted.
