Yes, it’s official. Volkswagen has revealed its new Grand California, which will make its debut at the Caravan Salon event in Düsseldorf towards the end of August 2018.
In July, VW released a teaser sketch of its new Crafter-based camper van, confirming that it would base a production model on the 2017 California XXL concept vehicle.
And now that model has been revealed, positioned to play in the six-metre class when it launches in early 2019. It will come complete with a bathroom (measuring 840 mm by 800 mm), a “large” sleeping area at the rear and even an optional bunk bed for children.
The cabinet trim in the Grand California will be white, with plenty of light being let in by the pop-open camper windows at the back and on the sides as well as the large skylights above the double bed in the rear and the living area. All camper windows, VW says, will be fitted with cassette blinds and flyscreens.
The Wolfsburg-based brand says an electrically powered step, which moves out in front of the sliding door, will make getting in and out easier, while a two-part mosquito net in the door also ships standard.
The Grand California will be fitted with swivel seats up front and a double bench seat in the living area. VW says the dining table will provide “ample room” for four people, while the kitchen fittings will include a pull-out 70-litre fridge (with freezer compartment), a twin-hob gas cooker, a sink and diverse drawers, pull-out storage compartments and tip-up shelves.
In addition to the toilet and shower, the bathroom includes a fold-out wash basin, shelves with holders for toiletries, a cupboard with integrated toilet paper holder, towel holders and a skylight for ventilation.
VW says it will reveal further details at the Caravan Salon event.
