We already know that the fifth-generation Toyota Supra will share much with the upcoming (co-developed) BMW Z5, but new rumours suggest that the highly anticipated sportscar may actually adopt a version of the hybrid powertrain from Toyota’s TS050 Le Mans racer.
According to Toyota Europe president and CEO Johan van Zyl, a road car that makes use of hybrid technology from a World Endurance Championship racing car is something that could well happen.
This becomes even more believable when you consider how Lexus is starting to utilise hybrid power in its sportscars (with the LC 500h a prime example).
The TS050 that endured a bitter end to this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans would likely provide inspiration for such a hybrid system.
The Supra is set to arrive in 2018 alongside the Z5. A hybrid powertrain at launch may be a possibility for Toyota, but nothing yet suggests this technology will see its way into the BMW.
You can expect both models to also be available with a BMW-sourced turbocharged straight-six.
