We recently reported that the new Renault Kwid will not come standard with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) when it launches in South Africa in November (although Renault says that may well change further down the line).
That (together with a recent AA report on the safety of the 23 cheapest cars in SA) got us thinking: just how many passenger vehicles currently available on SA’s new car market do without this particular safety system? Well, the list is rather an interesting one, and is made up of 18 derivatives across six brands.
ABS, of course, is a safety system that allows the car’s wheels to maintain tractive contact with the road surface under braking, essentially preventing the wheels from locking up. In short, ABS allows the driver to stay in control of the vehicle while applying maximum force on the brake pedal.
Locally, Chinese automaker Chery offers two variants without ABS: the QQ3 0,8 TE and QQ3 0,8 TX, with the former priced at under R100 000. All four models in Datsun’s local passenger car range (as well as the GO+ Panel Van, which is technically a commercial vehicle), meanwhile, make the list.
Neither of Hyundai’s two i10 derivatives are available with ABS (although all three Grand i10 variants are), while as many as five of the seven models in Kia’s Picanto line-up do without the safety feature (something that cost both Hyundai and Kia in the small automatic shootout in the August issue of CAR magazine).
The Mahindra Thar is also sans ABS, while four Tata models (across the Indica, Vista and Manza ranges) are missing a tick in this standard feature column. Here’s the full list…
