The Fiat Seicento

By: CAR magazine

The Fiat Seicento is a zippy compact car that is youthful and practical in its design, pure Italian in its styling and up-to-date in its technology.

The Seicento three-door hatchback measures 3 337 millimetres in length and

1 508 millimetres in width and yet its compact dimensions allow for a roomy

passenger cabin approved as a 5-seater. Its styling is simple and uncluttered

whilst incorporating the most modern of trends. Attention to detail is aplenty

on this distinctive city run-about.

This pocket-sized charmer by Fiat has personality that speaks of youthfulness

and liveliness and comes in an array of 8 fun body colours. Two versions make

up the Seicento range, the versatile ‘S’ and the gutsy ‘Sporting’.

The ‘Sporting’ is easily distinguishable by its sporty body-coloured bumpers,

spoilers and door mirrors, black bump side strips and alloy wheels. The bumpers

and door mirrors on the ‘S’ are black and the wheels are steel.

Several are the strong points of the Fiat Seicento amongst which are its ease

of handling and its standard of visibility, considered to be one of the best

in its category. This car’s dynamic qualities and creature comforts makes for

comfortable and enjoyable journeys for driver and passengers alike. For example,

the heater unit with recycle facility ensures a level of airflow and demisting

typical of higher segment cars.

Occupant safety is assured by the following standard features: front seatbelts

with inertia reel and pretensioners, an energy absorbing steering wheel with

a collapsible steering column and seats with an anti-submarining ridge designed

to prevent occupants from sliding under the seatbelt in the case of impact.

Both Seicento versions are powered by the latest electronic multi-point injection

FIRE 1108 cc engine that is reliable and spirited. This power unit ensures good

performance, the ‘Sporting’ being particularly lively and entertaining.

This 1108 cc engine eagerly develops a maximum power output of 40 kW at 5 000

rpm and a torque of 88 Nm at 2 750 rpm.

Reliable engineering offers up-to-date technology: the Seicento is fitted with

a dual crossover hydraulic braking system, a tried and tested five-speed gearbox

and suspension layouts that have classic independent configurations to ensure

superlative comfort and excellent roadholding. Front suspensions are MacPherson

type with lower wishbones and coil springs and suspensions at the rear have

tension arms that are anchored to a subframe which is secured to the body.

The steering on the Seicento is designed for easy handling and manoeuvring.

The ‘Sporting’ version is fitted with a new-generation electrical power assisted

steering (EPAS) for maximum driver comfort and driving pleasure.

The engine is parsimonious in its fuel returns and represents an effective

solution for town and out-of-town use. The Seicento ‘S’ achieves record-breaking

results at 120 km/h consuming 4.7 litres per 100 km and the ‘Sporting’ 5.2 litres

per 100 km over an extra-urban cycle.

The Fiat Seicento is a compact car with a difference as it has much to offer:

it will retail at a competitive price, it offers superb value for money and

is inexpensive to run. But that is not all – it is a car that is easy to drive

and requires little maintenance.
