Toyota is about to pull the wraps off its drop-top 86 model at the Geneva Motor Show next week but it seems someone within the organisation could not wait that long and leaked these official images onto the ‘net.
Even though the number plates claim that this is the “Concept” model, the production variants are not likely to stray too far from what you see here. Perhaps the stark whiter interior treatment and large alloys will make way for more staid options but that’s about it. Not that we couldn’t already guess what the model would look like anyway.
Viewed from some angles there are hints of Mazda’s MX-5 and Honda’s S2000, which bodes well as those are both stylish cars. If the 86 Open can emulate the dynamic characteristics of those two open-top machines then it will be on a good wicket. The new model will share the hard-top’s drivetrain, that is to say the same 2,0-litre flat-four engine and rear-wheel drive layout.
A few weeks ago we brought you an exclusive first look at the 86 Open when the car was photographed in Cape Town by a reader. And now it all ties together neatly. Anyone that knows Cape Town well will surely recognise the locations in these images as Camps Bay and Gordon’s Bay (with bits of Franschhoek in the video below).
And for good measure here is a video of the car being driven through Cape Town CBD and other parts of the Western Cape.
