VW Sport Coupe GTE concept announces next CC

By: Steve Smith

Not only a heads-up on what the next gen. VW CC will look like, but also a big hint toward VW’s new design language is this VW Sport Coupe GTE concept.

You saw the teaser sketches last week and now VW have released the first fully-rendered images of the car that’s making its debut this week at Geneva.

“Evolution and revolution come together in the Sport Coupe concept GTE,” VW design boss Walter de Silva said at the reveal. “This concept is based on Volkswagen design DNA, which has been visibly sharpened even more.”

It’s another vehicle underpinned by the VW grup’s flexible MQB platform and in this four-door coupe form its wheelbase is stretched to a long 302 cm providing what must be plenty of interior space.

Design

Key design elements include sleek lines, C-scoop intakes up front, and grille slats integrated with the headlights. Inside VW point out how the line from the dash panel and door shoulders appears to wrap around the four passengers like a cocoon. The dash panel, designed with horizontal elements and leather-trimmed at the top, transitions into the front door trim panels and then into the rear.

Drivetrain

The vehicle is powered by a plug-in hybrid drive system that combines a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 with a pair of electric motors, one integrated with the six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission that also helps the engine drive the front wheels, plus a second powering the rear wheels.

VW quote an output of 279 kW, with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5,0 secs, and a top speed of 250 km/h. The electric-only driving range is 51 km, but fully charged and filled with petrol it should have a range of 1 200 km.

The production CC will be launched in late 2016 or early 2017 and should feature VW’s new a new 10-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.
