The Lexus LFA was produced in very limited number despite being in development for as long as nine years. Buyers had to fork out an obscene amount of money to purchase one. Interestingly, though, there are still reportedly as many as 12 examples sitting at various dealerships around the United States.
While digging through the July 2017 sales figures, Autoblog.com spotted one LFA that was sold last month (they also uncovered that six that were sold in 2016). After getting in touch with Toyota, the American publication learned that there are 12 “new” models technically still listed as “dealer inventory”.
This is because initially the firm would only take purchase orders for the LFA to prevent “price gouging and speculation”. But interest in the car rapidly cooled by 2010. So, to ensure that cars would not waste away at the factory, it was decided that current owners would be allowed to purchase a second car and that dealers would be permitted to order more models to sell on themselves.
Despite these cars technically still being on the market, US customers can’t just walk into a dealership and buy one. It’s possible that these dealers may be holding them for display or keeping them as collectors’ items.
