A fully restored 1967 Volkswagen T1 Camper is set to go under the hammer in the United Kingdom, with expectations that it will fetch somewhere in the region of £90 000 (more than R1,4-million).
The split-screen, 13-window Type 2 was put it through an “extensive transformation process” by owner Steve Quinn about five years ago. And now the left-hand-drive Camper will go under the hammer at the Bonhams Collector’s Motor Car auction at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed.
When Quinn acquired the VW in 2008, the “rust-free, ex-California” example didn’t have an engine and was in need of a major makeover. Now, it boasts a 2,0-litre engine (which apparently has less than 3 000 km on the clock) mated to a Freeway Flyer gearbox and is billed as “one of the most celebrated models of its kind”.
Inside, you’ll find plush new seating and wood panelling for the storage areas, while the exterior is finished in the original Cumulus White over Sea Blue, with chrome for the bumpers and rims. The braking system has been upgraded with discs up front (complete with a servo and dual-circuit master cylinder) and larger Type 3 drums at the rear.
Interestingly, plenty of modern features have been added inside, including an Alpine surround sound system, a DVD player and even an internet connection.
