In June this year, Audi revealed the new A5 Coupé. A couple of months later, the Ingolstadt-based automaker unveiled the latest version of the A5 Sportback. And now, finally, the new A5 Cabriolet has arrived to complete the second-generation A5 family.
As expected, the open-top model shares much of its exterior design with its two siblings, but adds a fully automatic “acoustic” roof that opens (in 15 seconds) and closes (in 18 seconds) up to speeds of 50 km/h. Measuring 4 673 mm in length, the new A5 Cabriolet is 47 mm longer than its predecessor (and its wheelbase has grown 14 mm, too).
Audi claims that the body of the new A5 Cabriolet is “the stiffest in its class”, yet also among the lightest. Total weight has apparently been reduced by up to 40 kg, depending on the model.
The S5 Cabriolet, which employs the German brand’s 3,0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (worth some 260 kW and 500 N.m), sits at the top of the range (until the RS5 Cabriolet arrives, that is). It is capable of sprinting from zero to 100 km/h in 5,1 seconds, and employs quattro permanent all-wheel drive and an eight-speed tiptronic transmission as standard.
Other engines in the European range include the 185 kW 2,0 TFSI, the 140 kW 2,0 TDI and the 160 kW 3,0 TDI. At a later stage, Audi plans to add the 140 kW 2,0 TFSI and 210 kW 3,0 TDI to its line-up.
The new A5 and S5 Cabriolet will be launched in Europe in March 2017. Expect a local introduction later in that year.
