It was bound to happen sooner rather than later: every car manufacturer has turned its attention to making vehicles smartphone-compatible. No, I’m not talking about being able to make calls remotely, streaming music or accessing apps – that’s old news. I’m talking about driving your vehicle via a smartphone!
Jaguar Land Rover has revealed that, as part of the company’s autonomous driving programme, it has built a vehicle that can be remotely controlled via a smartphone.
This technology was demonstrated on the Range Rover Sport and it works through an app that allows you to steer, accelerate, and brake the vehicle, as well as change between high and low range.
A driver can now literally manoeuvre their vehicle from outside the cabin at speeds up to of 6,4 km/h. It will allow one to negotiate difficult terrain without the aid of a spotter, for example and, if you’re parked in at the mall, just whip out your smartphone and remotely reverse your Range Rover Sport out of that space.
However, you have to be within 10 meters of your vehicle, otherwise the system will stop operating.
