BMW’s new Compact Concept could offer a preview of what the rumoured 1 Series sedan might look like; a C-segment four-door sedan with distinct features from the hatch. The Compact Concept was revealed at this year’s Guangzhou Auto Show in China.
The Compact Sedan has a unique reflective liquid metal bronze paintwork as seen on many of BMW’s concepts. In terms of appearance the Compact Sedan has a somewhat different take to the current C-segment lineup. The traditional kidneys are apparent, but they’re enlarged (a common theme on BMW concepts), while a pair of LED headlights and set of M-Power shaped air intakes are used to complete the front end.
The profile of the Compact Concept shows some more BMW styling cues along with a set of sizable 20-inch alloy wheels, which most likely won’t make it into the final design should this car be confirmed for production. The concept also features soft-touch door handles rather than the usual pull system.
The rear design is quite subtle. Although the taillamps and exhaust tips are fairly large they have smooth edges and fit in well with the bodywork. A slight whale-tail boot design has also been added to complete the sporty design.
Within the Compact Concept the BMW theme continues. It’s been filled with orange ambient lighting and although slightly enhanced the layout is something that the manufacturer has become comfortable with. Despite having Nappa leather seating, a panoramic glass roof, touch-sensitive controls and a freestanding infotainment system the Compact Concept’s interior does seem more on the basic side. Additionally, the rear bench is said to only host up to two passengers.
No statements have been made regarding the specifications of he Compact Concept but if it is what the 1 Series Sedan will one day become then it will most likely make use of BMW’s modular front-wheel drive platform while mated to the three or four-cylinder engines as seen in the 2 Series Active Tourer or the new Mini Clubman. An optional all-wheel drive system for higher end models is expected to be a possibility. The Compact Concept is expected to be a competitor for Audi’s A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz’s CLA.
