It has been some time since BMW launched the current Z4, and since then Mercedes’ SLK (now called SLC), the all-new Audi TT and Porsche’s Cayman have been making good in the compact drop-top sportscar sphere. But now a clutch of spy pictures have revealed that BMW is busy working on a replacement for its ageing roadster, and it could wear a Z5 badge.
Fabric roof = reduced mass
Recent images have emerged of what appears to be the BMW Z5 being winter tested in preparation for a 2017 launch. Things to note from this heavily disguised test mule include the retention of the outgoing car’s archetypal roadster proportions (long bonnet, cab backwards design and a short rear section) and the adoption of a canvas roof. Not only is this a less complex option but there is also the benefit of reduced mass, when compared with the Z4’s folding hard top.
Co-developed
As we’ve reported before, BMW and Toyota will collaborate on the development of a new mid-size sportscar. The BMW will use this co-developed platform for its Z5, while the new Toyota Supra will represent the Japanese side of the deal.
Powertrains
As the BMW Z5 has yet to be confirmed by the German automaker, it is unclear what powertrain options will be offer. For now, a reasonable assumption would be some form of force-fed inline four and a turbocharged inline six, similar to that found in the M235i.
