The Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Discovery and Mitsubishi Pajero dominated the SUV section of last year’s Top 12 Best Buys competition. This year, the revamped Mercedes M-Class and BMW X5 join the fray – and while the German competitors are more luxury soft-roaders with off-road ability than dyed-in-the-wool 4x4s, they do maintain a high profile and much prestige.
As an indication, the Toyota RAV4 – a fashionable lifestyle vehicle – has so far shown the highly-rated Land Rover Freelander and Defender a clean pair of heels in the popular vote for the best compact SUV category. The RAV4 has drawn 29 per cent of the vote in that section, almost as much as the second-placed Freelander (17) and third-placed Jeep Cherokee (14) put together.
Meanwhile, Renault supporters look set to gain the upper hand over Volkswagen fans in the best MPV section. This section, which had joint leaders on Monday, has swung towards the Renault Espace (30 per cent of the vote). The VW Microbus is only two per cent behind the Espace, but the Chrysler Voyager has improved to 27 per cent and is lying in a close third place.
