A DKW 3=6 was one of the star attractions of CAR magazine in 1957 … the very first year of CAR magazine ever published. We conducted a full road test of the “Deek” and now, to celebrate 60 years of this illustrious magazine, this model will once again be a star feature.
We have unearthed and purchased an example in mint condition and, over the next three days, editor Steve Smith, technical editor Nicol Louw, and CAR lensman Kian Eriksen will be driving the DKW 3=6 down to Cape Town. The journey starts on 10 October in Mokopane, in the province of Limpopo, overnights in Kimberley in the Northern Cape and then in Beaufort West in the Western Cape, before ending in the Mother City on Wednesday 12 October.
Two very special guests will be along for the ride, too…
Dick de Bruyn, the vehicle’s former owner, will be able to say an extended farewell to his treasured “Deek” as he helps the CAR team with the driving duties.
A brand new Audi Q7 will also be there. Automotive historians will, of course, know that DKW was one of the four car brands (along with Horch, Wanderer, and Audi) that would combine to become Auto Union … and then Audi as we know it today. The Q7 will therefore be escorting its ancestor on the epic 1 700 km road trip.
