The Daihatsu YRV family in Britain is about to get bigger, with a new entry-level version and a 4×4.
Daihatsu’s YRV compact now has a new entry-level model and even the option of a 4×4 version.
The entry-level model, the Radical, features power-steering, twin airbags, radio-cassette player, rear wash-wipe, rev-counter and electric front windows. It retails for £7 995 (R95 940). It is almost £1,500 less than the previous entry-level car.
The new Radical2 has central-locking, rear head-restraints, electric body-colour door mirrors and sports steering wheel and costs £8,495 (R101 940).
While, the YRV 4Trak has an efficient four-wheel drive system which demands only a small penalty in fuel economy and performance. It also has a sporty look with 10-spoke 15x16ins alloy wheels. It sells for £10,995 (R131 940).
The new models go on sale in Britain in July. There are, however, no plans yet to bring the 4×4 version to South Africa. According to Ian Els, spokesman for Daihatsu South Africa, it would not be a viable option at the moment, but they will look at it more closely in the future.
“We are concentrating on the YRV that is already in the country right now. The YRV is already a niche market product and a 4×4 version would put the price in a whole different segment of the market,” he said.
“There is also a turbo version, but we have already opted not to bring that to South Africa as it is not really right for this market either.”
Daihatsu SA is currently selling two 4x4s, the Terios and the Rocky.
