For the 2015 model year, Honda has made some important changes to its CR-V SUV.
The highlights include a new turbodiesel engine and a new nine-speed automatic transmission. Software enhancements are highlighted by the implementation of an app-driven connectivity system. As expected, the car has also received subtle exterior updates.
The new 118 kW/350 N.m 1,6-litre, turbodiesel engine is connected to the new nine-speed automatic transmission. The result is a claimed, combined fuel consumption of only 4,9 litres per 100 km. Interestingly, Honda released the following information on the new transmission: “Depending on driving characteristics – engine speed and throttle application – the new nine-speed automatic transmission can shift directly down multiple gears, the possible shift patterns include 9-7, 9-5, 7-4, and 6-4”.
The new Honda infotainment system includes features such as internet radio, internet browsing, satellite navigation and a rear-view parking camera. The seven-inch touchscreen uses pinch, swipe and tap functions to navigate the system.
In terms of safety, the new CR-V also features the company’s new Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC) system.
Based on extensive research, the system uses a camera and radar to sense the position of other cars on the road, it then applies an algorithm to predict the likelihood of a vehicle cutting-in. According to Honda this is “typical European driving styles”. We think such a system would also prevent a few accidents in South Africa!
In terms of exterior design updates, the CR-V has received an updated grille and headlamps. Towards the centre, there is also a new bumper and skid plate.
Hopefully some of these updates will filter through to the local Honda CR-V. At this stage the new 1,6-litre diesel engine is unfortunately referred to as a “unique-to-Europe” engine. However, some of the other improvements should become available quite soon.
