The new Opel Mokka X has been launched in South Africa, featuring subtly updated styling and a slightly revised specification list.
Although this update includes a minor name change (the addition of the “X”), it is actually merely a facelift of the compact SUV launched internationally in 2012 and locally in early 2015. Indeed, the four-model range remains unchanged.
For the record, some 2 672 units have been sold in SA in the 18 months that the Mokka has been on the market.
So, what’s different? Well, besides the new family face, perhaps the most obvious external change to the Mokka X comes in the form of redesigned headlamps that combine daytime running lamps and LED technology.
But the cabin is where the majority of tweaks have been performed. The Enjoy model, for instance, now features Milano Jet Black upholstery, while the posher Cosmo trim comes in Jasmin Jet Black. The new Astra’s dashboard, meanwhile, has been swiped for use in the Mokka X.
The Cosmo now also boasts a high-end infotainment system with R4,0 IntelliLink and a driver display as standard (something offered as a R6 700 option on the Enjoy derivatives). Optional on the Cosmo, though, is Navi 900 IntelliLink, which includes a full colour display – and which will set you back some R10 700.
If Cosmo owners have yet more cash to splash, they can also upgrade to a premium LED lighting package, which adds LED taillights and auto-levelling headlights with “Adaptive Forward Lighting” technology and integrated cornering lights. The price for this? A princely R25 000. Or indeed a sunroof for a further R6 500.
All four derivatives – in Enjoy or Cosmo trim and with the choice of manual or automatic transmissions – are powered by an unchanged 1,4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, still worth 103 kW and 200 N.m (the latter between 1 850 and 4 900 r/min).
For the six-speed manual models, the sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes a claimed 9,8 seconds, with a top speed of 196 km/h. Six-speed automatic variants take 10,7 seconds to hit three figures, before running out of puff at 191 km/h.
All derivatives come standard with a five-year or 120 000 km warranty and a five-year or 90 000 km service plan (with intervals of 15 000 km). Check out pricing below (the Enjoy derivatives have gone up by around R2 000 each, while the Cosmo models each cost around R7 000 more than the prefacelift versions).
