A motorist caught speeding in his Volkswagen Golf 6 GTI in KwaZulu-Natal has been hit with an R18 000 fine.
According to The Mercury, the 28-year-old – identified as Ivan Botha – was clocked at 220 km/h on the N2, in a 120 km/h zone.
Botha was immediately arrested and taken to the Scottburgh police station, before appearing in court, where the fine was handed down.
KZN Transport MEC, Mxolisi Kaunda welcomed the court’s ruling, likening speedsters to murderers.
“[This] should be a great lesson to all who endanger our lives. Speedsters are like murderers, because at any moment their actions could lead to devastating consequences, including death and maiming of other road users,” said Kaunda.
“It is high time all road users, especially motorists, started taking our call for road safety seriously, and realise that it’s about life and death,” Kaunda added.
