Hyundai has introduced its IONIQ as a three-in-one Eco-friendly vehicle as it will be available with hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure EV powertrains. The IONIQ has set its sights on the Prius as its main competitor which is partly why the initial release will only feature the hybrid.
The IONIQ is expected to be powered by a 77 kW 146 N.m 1,6-litre Kappa GDI engine along with a 32 kW, 170 N.m electric motor with a predictive engine management system and a Lithium -ion polymer battery. This works with an Eco-assist to provideĀ suggestions the driver can use to keep the fuel economy as optimal as possible. This system is also able to provide real-time traffic updates and terrain analysis.
To keep the IONIQ as light as possible, Hyundai has made use of aliminium body panels and suspension components and claims that it makes the hybrid 26 kg lighter than what it would have been if conventional steel was used. The IONIQ will rest on a rear multi-link suspension and a double-wishbone front suspension with a low positioned battery.
Skinny 15-inch alloy wheels will be used to aid the hybrid in its attempt to achieve a 4,5 l/100km fuel consumption. Regenerative braking will also be featured.
This is all that Hyundai has revealed regarding the IONIQ but you can expect more information after its debut at this year’s NAIAS.
