Very rarely do we have the chance to see a manufacturer’s concept design for a seat. But this is the case with the new (rather extreme) “Kinetic Seat” from Lexus.
This unusual perch removes the traditional padding and upholstery and throws in something it calls a “fibre net”.
With the Kinetic Seat, Lexus says it aims to “re-evaluate the principles of car seat occupancy”. This net is said to read the shape of one’s body and mould itself to find the best possible structure to suit one’s spine.
The main goal here is stability for the body, which makes this concept seat suited to dynamically talented cars that experience frequent and harsh changes of direction.
If the car steers left or right, the seat will do what it can to keep its occupant’s body as still as possible as it works against g-forces.
The Kinetic Seat is also lighter, meaning it will lower the overall mass of the car. This is mostly thanks to the use of a compound called synthetic spider silk.
The concept seat will be on display at the Paris Motor Show.
