There is already much hype around the Golf GTI Clubsport. After all, it might be heading to our shores as the Edition 40, since the original GTI was launched in 1976.
According to British weekly magazine, Autocar, a Volkswagen official has confirmed that a more focused and hardcore version of the Clubsport is on the cards.
It seems this focused version will be made lighter by removing the rear seats, sound deadening to name two lightweight saving features. If reports are to be believed, VW’s engineers have been inspired by how Porsche manages to reduce their cars’ weight in the form of the GT3 and GT3 RS. Apart from weight saving, power is also set to increase to just over 220 kW.
The project is yet to be confirmed, but expect to see a concept car in May at the well-known Wörthersee show in Austria.
However, with VWSA unlikely to import three-door GTIs to South Africa anytime soon, it would be interesting to see which special models will come our way in the near future.
