The classic and collectable car market in South Africa is relatively small. However, now and then a few cars pop up at national auctions that do attract a healthy amount of interest.
Well known auction company Stephan Welz & Co. will be auctioning three classic cars at its upcoming event on 1 and 2 March at their offices in Alphen Estate, Constantia.
The first car is 1969 Jaguar E Type Series II Roadster. The red exterior hue ties in perfectly with the back interior leather. It is also a right-hand drive example, perfect for our roads. It also features the four-speed manual gearbox, while a hard top is also included with the car.
Stephan Welz & Co. puts the estimated value of the car at between R2,4 to R2,6 million.
Next up is a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S Ponton Coupé. Only 1 251 of these vehicles were built. The ivory exterior colour is complimented by the white leather interior. Up front is a 2,2-litre engine which is also connected to a manual gearbox and it is also right-hand drive.
The car is valued at between R1,8 and R2,0 million, as a similar model was last year auctioned by Stephan Welz & Co. for R1,8 million.
Finally, a 1955 Ford Thunderbird Convertible will also go under the hammer. Also white, the interior is covered in black and white leather. This left-hand drive unit features an automatic transmission. Stephan Welz & Co. has put an estimated value on the Ford of between R1 and R1,2 million.
These cars will form part of a Decorative and Fine Art auction, and pre-auction viewing takes place on Wednesday 24 February to Sunday 28 February 10 am to 5 pm.
