Mazda is set to unveil a new compact SUV that will slot in beneath the company’s bigger CX-7 crossover. Aptly named CX-5, this SUV, according to Mazda, makes use of an all-new chassis, body, engines as well as transmissions. This SUV will be the first to introduce Mazda’s new “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme, showed in concept form on the Mazda SHINARI and Mazda MINAGI.
European markets will get three engine derivatives making use of Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology. The line-up starts with the SKYACTIV-G 2,0-litre petrol engine followed by the SKYACTIV-D 2,2-litre turbodiesel engine. The latter will be available in two power derivatives.
It seems front-wheel and four-wheel drive models will be offered. It will be the front-wheel drive, manual transmission, lower powered 2,2-litre turbodiesel engine version that is said to have a CO2 figure of below 120 g/km. This means that should this derivative be made available to the South African market, buyers won’t need to pay our local CO2 tax.
Accompanying the CX-5 on Mazda’s Frankfurt Motor Show stand will be the updated Mazda3. It now features cleaner engines and uprated suspension while the interior has also came under the spotlight.
As the South African market has strong compact SUV demand, expect Mazda to launch this car locally some time next year.
