If humans were to evolve to survive car crashes, what would the typical person look like? Well, a campaign out of Australia has a potential – and rather bizarre – answer.
Meet Graham, the product of a collaboration between artist Patricia Piccinin, trauma surgeon Christian Kenfield, and road safety engineer Dr. David Logan.
“The truth is, cars have evolved a lot faster than we have,” Dr. Logan said.
“Our bodies are just not equipped to deal with the forces in a common crash scenario.”
Graham has a massive skull, a generously padded face, plenty of extra cerebrospinal fluid and handy ligaments to keep his brain in the right place in the event of a collision. You’ll also notice that he has no neck, and that his ribs are thicker and have essentially evolved into mini-airbags. Even his feet and skin are ready for a sudden impact.
Australian insurer the Transport Accident Commission commissioned the project as part of its “Towards Zero” campaign, which has the goal of eliminating crash fatalities altogether.
