Ever fancied owning a BMW 1 Series Sedan? Well, now you can have one … if you’re in China, that is.
Yes, the German automaker has revealed the new sedan variant of its 1 Series, which is essentially the production version of the concept revealed at the Guangzhou Motor Show in 2015. But the newcomer will be available in China only, and produced in that country by the BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd joint venture.
The BMW 1 Series Sedan is designed to take the fight to the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA, with BMW saying it has been “fined-tuned” according to Chinese customers’ habits.
Although the Munich-based automaker has yet to reveal technical specifications, the 1 Series Sedan is thought to ride on the brand’s UKL modular platform (currently used by the likes of the X1 and 2 Series Active Tourer) and thus employ front-wheel drive.
Will it ever be available outside of China? Well, while BMW remains tight-lipped, it makes sense that a similar product will be rolled out to other markets in the future. Even if rear-wheel drive BMW enthusiasts protest.
