Turbocharged 1,6-litre engines are generally associated with warm hatches like the Opel Astra 1,6T Sport or the Peugeot 308 1,6T GT. AMG, however thought that this would be a good displacement for its next hypercar.
According to CAR Magazine UK the turbocharged 1,6-litre V6 hybrid powertrain is destined to be stretched all the way to 969 kW and maintain a power to weight ratio of one kg per horsepower, placing it as a direct rival to the Aston Martin RB 001.
It will make use of other F1 inspired technologies such as the energy recovery system. Other rumours include active aero systems and four-wheel steering.
The AMG R50 project is being lead by Tobias Moers, creator of the SLS and AMG GT. He has confirmed that it will take the shape of a road-going gullwing coupe, but he has not clarified how limited production will be.
At the moment, all of these ideas are just claims as there is no visual product to be seen as yet. At AMG’s Paris Motor Show presentation, however a silhouette of an LMP1-like design was seen. This could be the proposed design for the AMG R50.
The AMG R50 is expected to make an official appearance at next year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
