The new A-Class has just been launched in South Africa. The A-Class introduces a number of big-car technologies into its division, especially in terms of safety equipment.

A collision warning system with brake assist module is fitted as standard and can be combined with an optional Pre-Safe system that can take pre-emptive measures before a crash, such as closing the car’s windows and tensioning the safety belt when its systems detect a potential accident scenario. Five engines (three petrols and two diesels) are available.

On the petrol front, there is a choice of 1,6- and 2,0-litre units with outputs of 85 kW in the A180, 115 kW in the A200 and 155 kW in the A250. The new petrol units feature Camtronic – a variable valve-control system that aids fuel consumption. On the diesel side, the A180 CDI develops 80kW/250 N.m and the range-topping A220 CDI features a 2,2-litre turbodiesel unit that develops 125 kW and 350 N.m of torque.

All of the engines feature start/stop technology and can be specified with a choice of six-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

  • Very competitive pricing. If it comes with Merc’s 6 year 120 000 km Maintenance plan…. A sure winner.
Let’s hope the A45 AMG will also be priced accordingly

  • wow thats not too bad from MB wonder how much is the new Golf ‘cos it’s also a serious machine

  • Phathutshedzo Maisha

The new Golf 7 is R310

  • Jack Ofalltrades

Entry point pricing very similar to BMW 1 series (R273K) and Audi A3 (R267K) before extras. No surprises to see them pitching all at similar level.

    • realtrevor

The entry level A3 actually costs more than that, it’s R275,500. The 1 entry level series packs a lot more powerful engine that the A3 and the A class.

  • bhve

85 Kw for the entry level-doesnt that make it a lazy vehicle? What is the Nm.number?

  • I think these people are starting to listen to our concerns with the pricing. I know that a lot of what others regard as standard, Merc and Audi are notorious for putting in as optional extras. looking at this one, the A3 and the new Golf, choosing is going to be very difficult. Us misers will settle for generously specced SUVs that offer more practicality and value.

  • Awaiting arrival of the 220 CDI with all the bells and whistles on 16 May !!!

  • Iamtomsthum

Why do the likes of MB & BMW continue to use the incorrect nomenclature on some of their products eg. A180=1.6l, BMW 118i=1.6l, 125i=2.0l
Not a bad looking car although not revolutionary, cover the front & it could be mistaken for either a Hyundai 120/130, Audi A3 or BMW 1 series hatch.

  • A real head turner and great to drive. Options are well priced. Those looking at Golf should look here rather.
