The Mitsubishi Fuso is a popular light-duty commercial truck, especially here in South Africa. This particular one, however is not exactly what we’re used to. It’s called the Fuso eCanter, and, if you haven’t guessed it yet, it’s an electric vehicle.
Despite having the traditional Fuso design, the eCanter possesses some futuristic and Eco-friendly features such as LED headlamps, a non-functional grill and aerodynamic side cladding.
The interior also gains a digital dashboard and a removable tablet infotainment system along with a stylish leather-wrapped steering wheel.
While making use of a 70 kWh water-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, the Fuso eCanter develops 185 kW and 380 N.m of torque while weighing in at 7 500 kg. It can carry a payload of 4 630 kg which can be increased if you opt for a smaller battery.
The Fuso eCanter will only have a range of 100 km and is unlikely to ever do more than 60 km/h which means it’s suitable for smaller-scale business with short distance deliveries.
80% charge takes about an hour through a high-power outlet while a full charge takes seven hours through a standard plug point.
Extensive tests of the Fuso eCanter took place in Portugal and Germany and are said to have been successful. Europe, Japan, and the States will have access to these trucks in limited numbers by next year.
