Mr Bean’s McLaren F1 sold for R150-million. Only crashed twice

Rowan Atkinson has managed to sell his McLaren F1 for a staggering amount of money – especially considering what he paid for it and even more especially given he has crashed the car twice.

The comedian, most famous for his TV and movie character “Mr Bean”, paid £640 000 for McLaren F1 chassis #61 back in 1997. He managed to crash his rare supercar two years later, driving into the back of another car, and then in 2011 he really binned it losing control on a wet road and eventually ending up in a ditch the McLaren’s engine thrown some feet away.

Repairs on the burgundy example of just 72 McLaren F1s ever built took nearly two years and was rumoured to have cost in excess of R15-million. Clearly that hasn’t affected the F1’s value too much and London-based luxury dealer Taylor & Crawley has announced the sale of the car with 66 000 km on the clock for an undisclosed sum… but it is said to be close to the asking price of £8 million (R152,4-million).
