Well-known USA motoring magazine Road & Track has published an article regarding a limited edition, new 911.
Set to be called the 911 R, it will feature the engine of the 991 GT3. This means 350 kW and 440 N.m. from the naturally-aspirated 3,8-litre, flat-six engine.
However, it won’t have any of the aerodynamic addenda of the GT3, and more importantly, will feature a manual transmission. There are also rumours that it will offer narrower tyres compared to the GT3 and that only 600 will be produced.
This model will be aimed at enthusiasts who weren’t pleased with the fact that the new GT3 wasn’t offered with a manual gearbox. Further rumours suggest that Porsche, similar to Ferrari, will offer it to selective clients first.
The fact that Porsche will be calling this potential model a 911 R, might upset some purists. The original 911 R from the 1960s was after all the lightest 911 ever built. Question is, if the modern interpretation of the 911 R heads to production, will Porsche allow it to be lighter and more driver focussed than both the 991 GT3 and GT3 RS?
